Robertson is recognised for her work on the Trypanosoma gambiense, a parasite carried by the tsetse fly which causes sleeping sickness. At Glasgow University her interest in protozoa had been encouraged by Professor Graham Kerr. After graduating, she worked at the Lister Institute and was appointed by the colonial office in Uganda to study the life cycle of trypanosome in 1911.
