Sets of cards with pictorial subjects were very popular in the later seventeenth century. This set gives a narrative of the supposed events of the Popish Plot. Each suit focuses on a different aspect of the plot but, within each suit, the chronology of events does not follow the order of the cards. The spades suit depicts the key event of the plot, the murder of the examining magistrate Sir Edmund Berry Godfrey shortly after hearing the testimony of Titus Oates.
Card size: 125mm x 175mm
Images are printed in their original proportions, within a white border.
