Born in Ilford, Smith studied at the Oxford Playhouse School and appeared in revue in the 1950s before joining the Old Vic (1959-60). In 1964 she played Desdemona in Othello opposite Laurence Olivier at the National Theatre, and was nominated for an Oscar the following year for her film performance in that role.
