Stage actor and director form 1911, in films from the early 1930s. Although he appeared in many films, Banks is probably best remembered in the lead role, Bob Lawrence, in The Man Who Knew Too Much. He is the grandfather of the architect Piers Gough, designer of the new galleries at the National Portrait Gallery.
