The artist John Martin began his career as an apprentice to a coach-painter and became famous for his large-scale dramatic panoramas usually inspired by historic and biblical themes of disaster and mass destruction. His works include The Fall of Nineveh (1828) and The Last Judgement: The Great Day of his Wrath (1852), which were popularised through affordable mezzotint prints.
