This engraving of the famous prison reformer John Howard visiting an imprisoned soldier and his family in a gloomy dungeon is a good example of Gillray's attempts at serious 'straight' engraving. In 1783 he practically abandoned caricature and for two and a half years dedicated himself wholly to this kind of work. He continued to produce straight prints throughout the 1780s.
