Flamsteed, the first Astronomer Royal, ws appointed by Charles II in 1675. He also laid the foundation stone for the first astronomical observatory at Greenwich, in the same year. Flamsteed combined his role as astronomer with that of active cleric. His catalogue of 2935 stars, the most comprehensive at that date was published posthumously in 1725. It was extremely useful to navigators when calculating land distances and estimating voyage times.
