Remembered for his membership of the liberal-socialist intelligentsia of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and his response to the First World War. He led most of his life at Cambridge, entering King's College in 1881, where he was elected to the Society of Apostles, becoming a fellow in 1887.
