King of the Gypsies. Son of a Devonshire clergyman, he ran away from school to join the gypsies to avoid punishment for hunting a deer. A career of swindling, transportation to America and involvement with the Young Pretender during the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745-6 was followed by respectable old age supported by his Carew relatives.
