In the English Civil Wars Ashley-Cooper had fought for King Charles I and then later for Parliament, but at the Restoration he was pardoned by King Charles II and became an influential politician. A supporter and patron of John Locke and a defender of civil liberties, he had nevertheless acquired a joint share in a sugar plantation in Barbados and a small share in the slave ship the Rose.
