Born in the village of Erukathur near Tiruvarur in the then Tanjore district to Narasimha Iyengar. He studied law in Madras and after graduating, practised as a lawyer in the Madras High Court. In 1905 he was appointed as an Assistant Editor of The Hindu when it was bought by his nephew Kasturi Ranga Iyengar. He resigned in 1915 to concentrate on its sister publication Swadessamitran.
