Keppel entered the navy when he was only ten years old. In 1740, he served under Lord Anson on his voyage around the world, a journey on which two thirds of the crew died. Keppel impressed Anson, who made him an acting Lieutenant. This was the start of a brilliant career. Keppel quickly rose through the ranks, gaining a reputation as an exceptional commander. He became one of the leading commanders of his day and a prominent figure in the administration of the Navy.... more
