by William Hookham Carpenter, after Margaret Sarah Carpenter
William Hookham Carpenter made this etching after the oil portrait of William Smith by his wife the painter Margaret Sarah Carpenter, which is also in the National Portrait Gallery's Collection. Smith was a long-term friend of the family, having overseen a number of significant sales of early engravings to the British Museum's prints and drawings department under Carpenter's keepership. Upon retiring from the print selling business in 1848, Smith devoted much time to his duties as Deputy Chairman.
