After joining the army in 1815, Havelock studied Hindustani and Persian at the Oriental Institute before traveling to India. He fought in the First Anglo-Burmese War (1823-6), the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-42) and the First Anglo-Sikh War (1845-6) and the Anglo-Persian War (1856-7).
