Rattigan was born in Kensington and educated at Harrow School and Trinity College Oxford, where he joined the University Dramatic Society. A decade after his first critical success, French Without Tears, Rattigan wrote his most celebrated and enduring works: The Winslow Boy (1946), The Browning Version (1948) and The Deep Blue Sea (1952).
