Cotton joined the Army in 1798. He took part in the Copenhagen expedition of 1807, and saw action in the Peninsular campaign the following year. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1811 and was awarded for his service with the Peninsular medal. Cotton played a prominent part in the Burma campaign of 1825-6 after which he was posted in India as major general.
