Hamilton distinguished himself in the First Boer War, 1881, and survived injuries sustained at the decisive British defeat at Majuba Hill. Although considered too young to receive the Victoria Cross, he was invited to dine with Queen Victoria. He was one of the most courageous generals in the Second Boer War and personally directed the final push against the Boer guerrillas.
