Wellington had so high an opinion of his services that he appointed him Commander of the British division occupying Paris. On the conclusion of the Napoleonic Wars, Barnard occupied various positions in the Royal Household. In 1849 he was appointed Lieutenant Governor of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea.
