Actor; appeared on stage from 1916 and in films from 1919; suave and elegant leading man, achieved success in both silent and sound films; starred in a string of hugely successful films in the 1930s and 1940s including Beau Geste (1926), A Tale of Two Cities (1935), The Prisoner of Zenda (1937) and Random Harvest (1942).
