This photograph was taken during Cowes Regatta on the Isle of Wight, an important sporting and social occasion. The Prince of Wales became commodore of the Royal Yacht Squadron at Cowes in 1863. Alexandra was always considered a leader in fashion. The outfit she wears is based on gentleman's tailoring and she wears a variation of a man's bowler hat.
