Raised in a Quaker family, political activism and debates about equal rights were daily features of her upbringing. She became a member of the Edinburgh Ladies' Emancipation Society and when this ended, became president of the Edinburgh branch of the National Society of Women's Suffrage. The radical politician John Bright was her brother, who introduced the first women's suffrage bill and her sister was the temperance activist and suffragette Margaret Bright Lucas.
