Dobson's oil portrait of Prince Rupert, the nephew of Charles I and one of his principal commanders in the Civil War, is now lost. Both Dobson and the engraver William Faithorne had been apprentices of the artist and printseller William Peake. During the Civil War, while Dobson worked for the court in Oxford, Faithorne fought as an officer in the Royalist army.
