Buckingham was elected Member of Parliament for Buckinghamshire in 1797 and served until 1813. He owned three plantations in Jamaica, the largest one was worked by 379 enslaved Africans. In 1804 he opposed William Wilberforce's bill for the abolition of the slave trade fearing the safety of white plantation owners in the West Indies. During his political career Buckingham also collected prints of which thirty-nine are in the National Portrait Gallery.
