Famously modest and retiring, Webb was a key artist in the Arts and Crafts Movement, co-founding with Morris the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings in 1877. He also partnered with Morris, (as well as the artists Burne-Jones and Rossetti) in the interior decorating and furnishing business, Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co., later to become Morris & Co..
