A one-act play originally written for Magee, Krapp's Last Tape, was first performed as a curtain raiser to Endgame at the Royal Court Theatre, London, directed by Donald McWhinnie in 1958. Beckett described Magee's hypnotic voice as the one he 'heard inside his mind'. Captioned 'Alone on the stage with a tape recorder the old man listens to his own voice describing an amorous interlude which he recorded thirty years ago.'
