Born in Thornaby-on-Tees, Barker studied at the London School of Economics and Durham University and began to write in her mid-twenties. Her first two novels described the lives of working class women; Union Street (1982), which won the Fawcett Prize and Blow Your House Down (1984). Her trilogy of novels about the First World War was partly inspired by her grandfather's experiences fighting in the trenches.
