The first novel by Sartre, Nausea (1938), contained many of the existentialist ideas that he later developed in works such as Being and Nothingness (1943) and Existentialism and Humanism (1946). During the Second World War, Sartre was a member of the Resistence in Paris. In 1946 together with the writer and philosopher Simone De Beauvoir, he founded the literary and political review, Les Temps Modernes.
