Hart studied at the Royal Academy while supporting himself by colouring theatrical prints and making copies of old masters on ivory. His first success came in 1830 with a painting exhibited at the Society of British Artists. He continued to paint as well as earning a living supplying drawings for wood engravings and contributing illustrations to various publications.
