In 1952 Hunt was given a special leave from the British Army of the Rhine to organise and lead the British expedition, which subsequently conquered Mount Everest in May 1953. Hunt did not reach the summit, but his planning enabled Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay to make the successful assault.
