In the celebrated production of Romeo and Juliet, directed by Gielgud at the New Theatre, Gielgud and Laurence Olivier alternated in the parts of Romeo and Mercutio. Here Gielgud and Peggy Ashcroft are in the title roles. The play was performed 186 times.
