Born in the Philippines, Macnab studied at Glasgow and Heatherley's art schools and served in both wars. An influential art teacher of the interwar period, he was founder and principal of the Grosvenor School of Modern Art, to which he recruited as teachers Claude Flight, Sybil Andrews and Cyril Power.
