French-born novelist and playwright, Dumas established his reputation with books including The Count of Monte Cristo (1844-5), The Three Muskateers (1844) and La Reine Margot (1845). During the 1850s, several of Dumas's plays were staged in London including Mademoiselle de Belle Isle (July 1851) and Les Demoiselles de St. Cyr (May 1853) at the St James Theatre.
