The National Portrait Gallery is delighted to collaborate on a new limited edition print with British artist Charmaine Watkiss and Counter Editions.
The edition is based on To reimagine an African Queen, on display in the Gallery as part of the Artists First: Contemporary Perspectives on Portraiture display.
Watkiss’ practice explores Caribbean botanical histories and matrilineal healing traditions. She draws from archives to construct narrative responses and uses her own likeness to channel a multitude of strong female archetypes to create “memory stories”.

About the Artist:
Charmaine Watkiss (b. 1964, London) is a British artist known for her works exploring the botanical legacy of the Caribbean and tracing the lineage to Africa. Informed by detailed archival research, she reimagines the women through whom such knowledge of plants and their properties has been handed down, using her own likeness to tell these collectively experienced ‘memory stories’.
