Took up acting in 1876 and formed his own company, the Elizabethans, in 1879, performing scenes from Shakespeare and the English classics around the country. Believing that Shakespeare should be performed under simpler conditions than were the tradition of the day, in 1881 he tested this theory staging Hamlet on a draped but otherwise bare stage.
