Considered the pre-eminent lawyer of his generation, Bingham has served as Britain's Senior Law Lord (2000-2000), Master of the Rolls (1992-6) and Lord Chief Justice (1996-2000). Bingham favoured incorporating the European Convention on Human Rights into domestic law (Human Rights Act, 1998) and advocated the separation of the judicial branch of the House of Lords from Parliament to create the Supreme Court (2009).
