While still a student Faed was a successful exhibitor at the Royal Scottish Academy annual exhibitions and in recognition of this he was elected an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy at the young age of twenty-three. He moved to London three years later, where he had much success as a domestic genre painter. His 1855 painting, The Mitherless Bairn, portraying an orphan child being taken in by poor cottagers, was a great success in its day, appealing as it did to Victorian sentimentality. He... more
