A page to Charles I and a close confidant of Charles II, Chiffinch was appointed Keeper of the Privy Closet and of the King's Jewels at the Restoration. At Whitehall he was also charged with the management and preservation of the King's collection of old master paintings, with the view to making it accessible 'to great princes and curious strangers'.
