The 'father of Irish Republicanism', Tone founded the radical Society of United Irishman in 1791 and persuaded the French to make four invasion attempts on Ireland between 1796 and 1798 to help win the country's full independence from Britain. Tone was captured during the last effort and sentenced to death for high treason. He attempted suicide while in custody and died of his wound eight days later.
