Admiral. Theatrical and self-centred but brave and energetic, Smith caught the public imagination in 1798 by his escape from the Temple prison in Paris, where he had been imprisoned by the French after his capture in a naval expedition off Le Havre. He was back in the public eye again in 1799 as a result of his heroic defence of Acre in the eastern Mediterranean.
