Barnes entered the army as an Ensign in the 47th Regiment in 1792. Promoted repeatedly, by 1813 he had become a Major General. He served on Wellington's staff in the Peninsular War from 1812, commanding a brigade in various battles. He also fought, and was severely wounded, at Waterloo in 1815. Barnes's promotions continued after Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo and by 1820 he was Colonel of the 1st Battalion Rifle Brigade, before being made Lieutenant General in 1825.
