Layard was an archaeologist, politician, diplomat, art collector and Trustee of the National Gallery. He was also a great friend of the artist, George Frederic Watts. Having carried out two excavations in 1845-6 and 1849-50, he wrote Nineveh and its Remains (1849) and Discoveries in the Ruins of Nineveh and Babylon (1853), both published by John Murray. Taking up a parliamentary career in 1852, Layard won the seat of Aylesbury as a Liberal.
