Despite Grierson's mother encouraging her to paint as a child, her accomplished career in botanical illustration came about by accident. After working in the Photographic Reconnaissance Unit of the Women's Auxillary Air Force during World War II, Grierson was employed by Hunting Aerosurveys, whose maps were based on aerial photography.
