After studying natural sciences at the University of Bern in Switzerland, Skalinska taught biology in schools before becoming an assistant at a genetic station in Warsaw. By 1920 she had become the assistant professor at the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding at Warsaw University. She relocated to London, where she remained following the outbreak of World War II, contributing to research on the evolutionary changes of species at Kew Gardens.
