Amery was an advocate of Imperial unity, seeing the British Empire as a force for justice and progress in the world. He supported the evolution of the dominions into independent nations bound to Britain by many ties. He was chief correspondent for The Times during the 1899-1902 Boer War and remained on the staff of that paper until 1909. Entering Parliament in 1911, Amery was made a privy councillor in 1922.
