Henry Fitzalan-Howard came from a long line of Catholic Dukes of Norfolk. After the Catholic Relief Act of 1829, his grandfather, Henry Charles, was the first Catholic to sit in the House of Lords since the Reformation. He succeeded to the title in 1860 and undertook a programme of philanthropy that served in part to reintegrate Roman Catholics into civic life.
