probably by James Craig Annan, for T. & R. Annan & Sons

Granville-Barker did much to form a new style of presentation of Shakespeare through experimental productions held at the Savoy Theatre between 1912 and 1914. In his Midsummer Night's Dream (1914) the fairies were slightly sinister, dressed in gold and moved against purple and green draperies. Granville-Barker wrote his major Shakespeare criticism Prefaces to Shakespeare between 1924 and 1946. In the introduction he wrote, 'All great drama tends to concentrate upon character... not upon picturing men as they show themselves... but on the hidden man'.
