After serving as chairman of the subcommittee of the Agricultural Organization Society, Lady Denman helped to found the Women's Institute in Britain in 1916. Under Denman's guidance the institutes became self-governing in late 1917 when the National Federation of Women's Institutes was formed. She was elected its first President and was re-elected every year until she retired in 1946. She continued her war work in World War Two during which she served as Director of the Women's Land Army.
