George Children was called to the bar in 1767, but never practised law. In 1776 he married Susanna Marshall Jordan. The following year she gave birth to their only son, John George Children, and died six days later. Children thereafter devoted himself to his son's upbringing and to local affairs. In 1792 with two friends he established the Tonbridge Bank.
