Pethick-Lawrence trained for the Bar and worked in the East End of London with his wife Emmeline Pethick, whose name he took. Together they supported women's suffrage, were joint editors of Votes for Women (1907), and in 1912 were imprisoned. Pethick-Lawrence was a conscientious objector in 1914-18. Elected Labour MP for West Leicester in 1923, he held the seat until 1931.
