Dickens's second visit to America was purely a business enterprise. This is one of a series of photographs that record his urbane appearance during the reading tour he undertook from November 1867 until April 1868. Taken by leading photographers in New York, one of whom, Jeremiah Gurney, was the first to open a photographic gallery in America, they were sold as memoirs to an eager American public.
